1. What Is Xiangyunsha?

Xiangyunsha is one of China's most precious traditional luxury fabrics. It is made from pure mulberry silk that undergoes a unique, labour-intensive hand-dyeing process using the extract of the dioscorea cirrhosa yam (a local medicinal plant) and iron-rich river mud from the Pearl River Delta.

The entire production takes 15 to 20 working days and involves more than 10 manual steps, including repeated dyeing, sun-drying, mud-coating, rinsing and softening. No two pieces of xiangyunsha are exactly alike — the fabric develops natural colour variations and a subtle, crackled texture that cannot be replicated by machines.

• Natural colour palette: The front side is typically a deep brownish-black or dark brown; the reverse side retains a warm reddish-brown or amber tone from the yam extract.
• Cool and breathable: Despite being silk, the plant-dye coating makes xiangyunsha exceptionally cool to the touch and highly breathable — ideal for hot and humid climates.
• Quick-drying and sweat-resistant: The fabric dries rapidly and does not cling to the body when sweating.
• Durable and long-lasting: Properly cared for, xiangyunsha garments can last for decades. The fabric actually softens and improves with age, developing a richer patina over time.
• Non-stretch: Xiangyunsha has almost no elasticity. Garments must be cut with sufficient wearing ease — this directly affects your size selection.

• No stretch means no forgiveness. Unlike knit or jersey fabrics, xiangyunsha will not stretch to accommodate your body. Always choose a size with at least 4-6 cm of ease over your raw bust measurement.
• If between two sizes, size up. A slightly looser fit is more comfortable and preserves the fabric's natural drape. A tight xiangyunsha garment may tear at the seams.
• Pay attention to shoulder width. Xiangyunsha is often used for structured traditional-style tops (tangzhuang, mandarin-collar blouses). Shoulder seams should sit correctly — the fabric cannot stretch to compensate.
• Layered styles run roomier. Some xiangyunsha designs are intentionally cut oversized for a relaxed, traditional silhouette. Check the garment's flat-measurement chart rather than relying on your usual size.
